The primary purpose of a BSC is to serve as a means to protect the laboratory worker and the surrounding environment from pathogens. All exhaust air is HEPA-filtered as it exits the biosafety cabinet, removing harmful bacteria and viruses.
A Bio-safety cabinet is called by several names in research industry; microbiological safety cabinet, biological safety cabinet (Acronym: BSC) and Bio-safety hood are such common names which are referred by microbiologists.
Bio-safety cabinets are designed to provide personnel, environmental and product protection. Air flow is drawn around the operator into the front grille of the cabinet which provides personnel protection.
1.1 Types of Class II Biosafety Cabinet:
All Class II cabinets are designed for work involving microorganisms assigned to bio-safety levels 1, 2 and 3. In order to meet varying research and clinical needs, Biosafety Cabinets are designed mostly in 3 types i.e. Type A2, Type B1, and Type B2. Regardless of type, each cabinet provides the same level of protection. According to international sanitation standards, there are exactly same pass and fail criteria for all of them.
Bio-safety Cabinet Class 2 Type A2 In this type of Class II BSC, approximately 70% of the HEPA filtered air is circulated through the cabinet, while 30% passes through an exhaust HEPA filter and is discharged. Biosafety Cabinet Class 2 Type B1:
This Class II BSC, exhausts 60% - 70% of the HEPA filtered air, while 30% - 40% air is re-circulated inside workspace through HEPA filter. Bio-safety Cabinet Class 2 Type B2: It is total exhaust type BSC, no re-circulation inside workspace; blower exhausts 100% of the filtered air. 1.2 *FEATURES OF BIO-SAFETY CABINET. #Class 5 conditions (class 100) per ISO14644-1 and 2#10° sloped front for comfortable working#Produces less heat and energy efficient#Highly efficient airflow management system#Lightening through fluorescent lamp#Filters can be changed easily front side#Durable construction for long service life#Durable wall plenum design#Easy to clean and maintain#Framless auto sliding glass door#Low noise operation#Audio / visual sash alarm.

Bio Safety Cabinet also known as biology safety cabinets, are enclosed, ventilated laboratory workspace areas designed to protect the user and surrounding environment from pathogens. All exhaust air is HEPA filtered to remove hazardous agents such as virus and bacteria. Bio safety cabinet are used in many laboratories including clinical and research labs. Classification: Class 1: Protection for the user and surrounding environment, but no protection for the sample being tested. Class 2: Protection for the user, environment and sample. Type A1/A2-re-circulate air back into the laboratory. A1 & A2 are similar but different by the minimum average inflow velocity(FPM). Type B1/B2-re-circulate a percentage of air into laboratory. B2 cabinates are entirely hard ducted. Class 3: Also known as glove boxes, provides maximum protection: the enclosure is gas-tight, and all materials enter and leave through a dunk tank or double-door autoclave. Choice of cabinet depends on level of protection needed for the laboratory worker and the sample of interest. Other Details: Filteration: 1st Stage- Pre filter with efficiency of 85% down to 10 micron. 2nd Stage- HEPA filter with efficiency of 99.999% down to 0.3 micron at supply/exhaust position return air filter. 3rd Stage- Fine filter with efficiency of 95% down to 5 micron. Optional Features: Also visual alarm indicating HEPA filter condition flame proof fittings.

Biosafety Cabinet Class II Type A2, Type B1 & Type B2
The difference between A2 and B2 of the Class 2 biological safety cabinets is that the exhaust airflow of the A2 type safety cabinet is discharged back to the room after high-efficiency filtration, and the exhaust airflow of the B2 type safety cabinet is discharged outdoors after high-efficiency filtration. 1.
Vertical Laminar Air Flow (VLAF) refers to a type of airflow system commonly used in controlled environments, such as cleanrooms, laboratories, or manufacturing areas where a sterile environment is essential. In this system, air flows in a vertical direction (from the ceiling to the floor) with minimal turbulence, ensuring that the air remains clean and free of contaminants. The laminar flow principle in the vertical configuration is specifically designed to create a contamination-free zone for sensitive operations, such as in medical or pharmaceutical settings.
